Unfortunately due to Covid-19 all First Communions and Confirmations have been postponed.
This is a special time for the boys and girls in our Primary Schools who are due to receive the sacrament of Confirmation and First Holy Communion. It is extremely disappointing for the children, their families, the schools and the parish community that these sacraments have to be postponed this year. It is an occasion I know we were all looking forward to.
Many people have been asking when Confirmation and First Holy Communion will be held. The answer is we simply do not know at this stage. Our hope is that we will be in a position to celebrate Confirmation and First Holy Communion Ceremonies in the autumn; however, this will depend on advice from the Government, the Health Authorities and Archbishop’s House.
In the Government proposals, churches can reopen on July 20, but that does not mean we will return to the way things were. Social distancing will be a requirement for some considerable time to come, so we are unlikely to see packed churches with family and friends. Different ways in which the Sacraments can be celebrated that respect the health and safety of all involved will have to be examined. We will do our best to ensure that whatever plan we adopt, will be a special and memorable occasion for the children.
Let us keep in our prayers the boys and girls who will have to wait a bit longer to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the most precious gift of all, the Body of Christ.
